Ability Counts - Norwich City unveil Disability Awareness Week

Norwich City FC are hosting their first Disability Awareness Week ahead of the fixture with Reading on Saturday 24 September.

The week will include a variety of different activities with the aim of increasing awareness among supporters of the many different disabilities confronting supporters and the public in general as well as highlighting the new facilities and services for disabled spectators at Carrow Road

The event will also showcase the many opportunities for local disabled people to take part in coaching and organised matches with the new Football in the Community (FITC) programme, "Ability Counts"

Canaries for the Community sponsors Norwich Union and building contractors RG Carter are joint sponsors of the Club's Disability Awareness Week., further strengthening the links between the Canaries and the two companies. Norwich Union are sponsors of the Community Stand, which is home to the new disabled facilities constructed by RG Carter

The event starts on Wednesday 21 September on the Astroturf at the University of East Anglia's sports park. FITC will be holding an hour of taster activities for several disabled groups highlighting the coaching schemes the organisation undertakes as part of their "Ability Counts" programme.

The aim is to give everybody, regardless of their type of disability the opportunity to take part in regular coaching sessions and tournaments with other players of a similar standard.

On Friday September 23rd Carrow Road is holding an open house between 2pm and 7pm to allow supporters and groups who provide for disabled people an opportunity to view the newly opened disabled supporters facilities.. Ground tours of the stadium will take place every half hour from 2.30 pm

The newly opened Study Support Centre in the Norwich Union Community Stand will also be open to give people the chance to take par tin short informal computer sessions. Centre tutors will be on hand to offer help and guidance.

Finally on Saturday September 24th at the match against Reading, Norwich City Chairman, Roger Munby, will officially open the new Ability Counts Gallery prior to kick off. The match will see a number of activities aimed at raising awareness of the new facilities, the disabled coaching work undertaken by FITC and the work of the newly formed Disabled Supporters Working Group
